Have you ever dreamt of escaping to another era?
For eight magical summers, I volunteered at Heritage Hill State Park and did just that! A band of history enthusiasts, we transformed ourselves into ladies and gentlemen of the past. Stepping through the park gates was like stepping back in time itself.
We spent hours gossiping, giggling, and preparing for another day in 1836,1870, or 1905. Our days were filled with tending fires, cooking authentic meals in hearths and woodstoves, and all the while, educating hundreds of visitors about the lives of those who came before us.
My passion for history wasn’t born in a museum but rather blossomed between the pages of captivating books and on the silver screen. Filling notebooks with tales, my love for storytelling thrived alongside my living history experiences.
These experiences are far more than just background. They’re a wellspring for my novels, providing rich details of time periods and characters – all inspired by our ancestors and their enduring impact on history. Every detail I learned as an interpreter, from the way people spoke to the skills they possessed, fuels the lives of the characters I create.
My writing journey wasn’t linear. Psychology and nursing provided me with a unique perspective on the human condition, skills that now enrich the complexities of my characters.
When I’m not crafting stories, you might find me kayaking or hiking with my children, golfing with my husband, or quietly stitching away at a historical quilt or knitting project – Keeping the past alive in much the same way women before me passed their time.
Sometimes when people read a book and then review it. Often a reviewer wants to tell you everything about the book All the beauty, all the revelations, all the reasons why they like the book. BUT I will restrain myself...and just say READ THIS BOOK! All you historical fiction fans you will want to add this one to your bookshelves.
Wonderful story about one girl's personal struggle with life events brought on by the Civil War. It gave me a new perspective on the war I didn't have before. I love when a book can get me emotionally involved with the characters. I felt their struggles, their pain, their happiness, their sadness. I really enjoy reading books on the trials and tribulations of everyday people living through extraordinary events and experiences.
The story lived up to every expectation I had for it, making it both a learning experience and enjoyable. The Cause was different from many books I have read from that genre, for one, it was written from a female's perspective as aforementioned. The book felt real, almost as if Emilee walked Gettysburg back in 1860's and I believe that had to do with the fact that many of the supporting characters actually did.
This is truly a story the can interest the common girl in historical fiction. While reading this book I fell in love with the characters and each of their stories. I found the main character Emilie extremely relate-able. Towards the end of the book I found myself feeling like a proud mother, seeing her grow. With that I absolutely loved the way Ellyn tied in real people from the civil war era and had them interact with her characters
Loved the book. Great local author.
